Embracing Progress: A Year in Review and the Path Ahead

December 19, 2023

As 2023 draws to a close, we stand at the threshold of a new year—a year that promises continued innovation and growth. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, it’s evident that our resilience has been a beacon through the transformative tide brought about by COVID-19.

The past year marked a significant turn toward normalization, a testament to human ingenuity and collective effort. We witnessed groundbreaking developments in pharmaceuticals and technology, with strides in eye care exemplifying this surge. States championing full-scope eye care, including laser and minor surgical procedures, have set a precedent for comprehensive patient care.

Our return to in-person continuing education was nothing short of remarkable. The American Academy of Optometry flourished, reinvigorating our community’s passion for learning. Although SkiVision, a personal tradition of 22 consecutive years of speaking engagements,  concluded, our spirit of collaboration gave rise to the Alpha Omega Consulting Group — an initiative that reinvented the ability for eye care companies to build short-term advisory boards and of course continue a ski meeting format, blending education with the slopes.

In the digital realm, I had the privilege of being the founding clinical editor of this publication, Review of Presbyopia and the Aging Eye, where an esteemed editorial board, including my own children, imparted invaluable insights monthly. The personal intersects the professional here, a sentiment echoed by a joyous wedding in the ballroom of my Charleston home by one of our editors. It was amazing. Our editorial board sets a new standard for educational excellence, which is archived for your learning experience. We are excited about the new innovations and practice enhancements that we will deliver in 2024.

Our profession thrives on the synergy between colleagues, industry partners, media allies, and our patients. This year, we solidified these bonds, shaping a robust future for optometry. We will continue this endeavor in 2024 even bigger and better.

The personal highlight for me in 2023 was our family trip to Israel, celebrating my granddaughter Maddie’s bat mitzvah — an event symbolizing family and celebration. Celebrating special occasions is what makes this time of year so special. What was your special memory?

As I extend my gratitude to our editorial board, publishers, and readers, I also look to the horizon with optimism. Here’s to a festive holiday season and a vibrant New Year. To each of you dedicated to eye care — Viva 2024!
